TORONTO – City councillor Giorgio Mammoliti pleaded guilty Friday in a Toronto courtroom of campaign overspending during the 2010 municipal election.
The Ward 7 councillor plead guilty to four of five charges including overspending by at least $10,000, filing false financial records and failing to keep records of campaign expenses.
Mammoliti is also required to pay back $17,500.
“In an effort to resolved the matter and continue to represent the community, I did plead guilty,” Mammolti told reporters at city hall Friday.
“It closes a chapter in the audit and speculation from many that I would lose the seat. I haven’t and I will continue to move forward as councillor for Ward 7.”
Justice of the Peace Dennis Lee agreed in court that paying back the campaign overspending was a sufficient punishment as opposed to having Mammoliti lose his council seat.
“The two comments that came out of this was it was inadvertent and I acted in good faith,” Mammoliti said.
An audit for Mammoliti’s 2010 campaign expenses had found he exceeded the spending limit of $27,464.65.
