NACKAWIC, N.B. – New Brunswick’s Department of Health is investigating after over 30 people fell ill and one died from eating at a community Christmas dinner held in Nackawic, N.B. last week.
Dr. Jennifer Russell, acting chief medical officer of health, said the illness is thought to be due to contaminated food or water borne.
An 87-year-old woman died shortly after being admitted to hospital.
Attendees of the event, held Dec. 5, reported signs of gastrointestinal illness, diarrhea and abdominal pain shortly after the dinner.
Public Health is investigating. They said samples have been collected and sent for laboratory analysis and testing to help identify the cause and if there were any contaminated food items.
Russell said no other hospitalized cases have been reported.
