WINNIPEG – The city is looking to add 120 more reduced-speed school zones, starting in the new year.

City council is set to vote on the proposal Wednesday morning.

A first wave of reduced-speed school zones came in to affect in September, when the speed limit around 171 Winnipeg schools was reduced to 30 kilometres per hour.

More than 500 streets around schools are currently affected.

Obstacles, such as a lack of signs, have allowed some speedy drivers to get away without a ticket. Police are hoping that will all be rectified by next year.

Council will vote Wednesday on changes to the by-law that would fix the problems, and clear the way for 120 more reduced speed school zones. If it passes, work would begin in January to install the signs, which should be complete by the end of February.

The reduced speed limit is not in force until the signs are up.

A full list of the new zones can be found on city council’s agenda.

Reduced-speed school zones are in effect from 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday to Friday during the months of September to June. Reduced-speed school zones apply to any street that:
• borders a private or public school which includes grade six or lower,
• is not a regional street, and
• can meet the requirements for signage set out in the Manitoba Reduced-Speed School Zones Regulation.
