Hockey legend Jean Béliveau honoured before Canadiens-Wild game

Hockey Hall of Famer Jean Béliveau was honoured before the Montreal Canadiens and Minnesota Wild game Wednesday night with a moment of silence.

Béliveau passed away Tuesday at the age of 83.

The longtime captain of the Montreal Canadiens was known for his powerful size and excellent stick-handling skills, which helped him win 10 Stanley Cups in his 20-season playing career.

After retiring in 1971, Béliveau remained with the Canadiens as an executive and would go on to win Lord Stanley’s Cup another seven times.

Montreal fans will have an opportunity to pay their respects to the legend after the team announced Béliveau will “lay in wake” at the Bell Centre on Sunday and Monday before his funeral on Dec. 10.

A bronze statue of the former captain will be on display across from the Bell Centre’s main entrance until Saturday night.
