Family of Surrey senior injured in hit-and-run wants justice

WATCH: A Surrey man is looking for answers. His 69-year-old mother was critically injured in a hit and run one week ago. And now, he’s asking the driver responsible to come forward. Elaine Yong reports.

A 69-year-old struck in a hit-and-run in Surrey last weekend is determined to walk again.

Her family is determined to find the person who hit her.

“Obviously the person who did this is a big coward and won’t come forward,” says John Oravec.

John’s mother Vilma was hit by a white or grey vehicle when she was crossing King George Boulevard last Saturday. She had just gotten off the bus, returning from a day trip to White Rock where she was shopping for her grandson’s upcoming wedding.

“She’s a very giving person,” her granddaughter Monika Levarsky says. “She loves to give to everyone, even our church and us, she just spoils everyone with everything.”

Vilma had a compound fracture of her left leg that took nine hours of surgery to fix, and is currently confined to a wheelchair at Royal Columbian Hospital.

Surrey RCMP continue to investigate, while Vilma’s family asks for whoever hit her to come forward.

“Just come forward,” says John.

“If you do come forward, it shows you do a have a little bit of a conscience and some feeling.”
