Tim Engel appeals murder conviction

LETHBRIDGE- 37-year-old Timmy Douglas Engel of Claresholm has appealed his 1st degree murder charge.

 

He made the appeal earlier this month and the matter will now go through the appeal process at the Calgary courts.

 

Engel was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison without parole for 25 years at the end of October.

He was convicted in the January 2012 murder and dismemberment of Otto “Bunty” Loose, a 77-year-old farmer from Vulcan.

 

During the trial, the crown prosecutor played video of Engel confessing to the crime.

But, after the verdict was read, Engel had an outburst in court, saying he didn’t do it.

 

The Loose family says they knew an appeal was possible, but are optimistic the outcome of the trial will not change.

 

Global News spoke to Loose’s daughter, Lavonda Justinick who said, “We were warned an appeal was possible, but it is disappointing. You think it’s over, and then it’s not. But, I guess this is all part of the legal system.”
