TORONTO – Brampton city council ordered Mayor Susan Fennell to pay back $144,150 and docked her 90 days pay in a 7-3 vote Wednesday, according to the Toronto Star.
The vote comes in the wake of a city integrity commissioner’s finding that Fennell “knowingly” broke the city’s expense policies with the alleged use of an on-call limousine service.
A report done by Deloitte Canada and released in August found Fennell racked up $172,608 in expenses. However, $41,027 of it was repaid.
The report found Fennell expensed $45,000 for an on-call limousine service.
But Fennell, who lost her bid for re-election in October’s municipal election, said on October 24 that an arbitrator’s report had cleared her of expense violations.
“Some of my detractors said I owed over $170,000. I said over and over I did not. I respected the rules,” Fennell told reporters outside her home at the time.
“All that is owing is a fraction of that. Just over $3,000. As of this morning, I am preparing a cheque. I’m happy to pay it.”
