Sick puppy needs indoor swimming pool for rehabilitation

MONCTON, N.B. – A Moncton couple is hoping that there is a dog lover in the city that could help them with their puppy’s rehabilitation.

Rosco, a nine-month-old Newfoundland dog, had surgery on his left hip a few weeks ago and is supposed to exercise regularly to rebuild his muscle.

It can be hard to make him go on walks, as he already weighs 80 lbs.

“He’s supposed to do four times a day of physiotherapy in terms of walking on grass of a soft surface,” said Cory Bembridge, Rosco’s owner. “Sometimes he makes it through five minutes of it and just wants to sit down or lay down. He gets tired really easily.”

Rosco was born with two severely displaced hips. Bembridge’s fiance, Stacey Butler, said the vet told her it was the worse he had ever seen in a young dog.

“They weren’t even in the sockets,” she said. “So our options were two surgeries that would be a little over $3,000 or having him euthanized.”

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

After the first surgery, the vet told them that the best way to help Rosco heal was to have him swim three or four times a week for 10 minutes at a time. But the cold water outside, would cause muscle cramping. So they needed to find an indoor pool.

Not knowing where else to turn, they decided to post an ad on Kijiji.

“I was really at a desperation,” Butler said. “I didn’t know what else to do and I know a lot of people post ads on Kijiji, so I sort of thought, like it’s a real shot and nobody might answer me, but I’ve got nothing left to lose.”

The response has been overwhelming. Since Butler posted the ad late Tuesday night, it has been viewed more than 26,000 times. They have also received more than 300 e-mails from strangers, mainly wishing them well.
“I’m getting e-mails from people in Newfoundland, British Columbia, Alberta,” Butler said. “All over and most of them are letters of support from fellow animal lovers, which really helps us get through this.”
She said people offered to board Butler and Roscoe in their home so they could go to therapy pools in Saint John or Halifax, but they aren’t able to make the trip.
A friend also set-up a ‘Go Fund Me’ page for Rosco’s surgery without telling the couple, because she said she knew they would never ask for money themselves, but know that they needed help.
They are still looking for a pool in Moncton. They’re hoping that someone will be able to help them soon. Rosco is supposed to go for a second surgery on his other leg, but it will only happen if he can successfully rebuild the muscle on his first leg.
Butler said there is a bit of urgency to having the second surgery because his leg is still causing Rosco pain.
