WATCH: A bad week for Kelowna SPCA

KELOWNA — It’s been a rough week for 19 little kittens at the Kelowna SPCA.

After being left out in the cold in two small carrier boxes on Monday, these kittens were disrupted by a break-in two days later, prompting the SPCA to close down for the day.

Animal Care Supervisor, Cam Buksa says the alarms at the Kelowna SPCA shelter went off at around 4:30 Wednesday morning after someone broke into the building through the front door.

Buksa says it’s been a difficult week between the break-in and the amount of cats left outside the shelter. However, he says as they work on repairing their own shelter, they will also work on finding homes for the kittens.

“Overall their health appears to be good so thankfully we’ll be getting them taken care of quite quickly,” says Buksa.

As for the break-in, he says the front door has been damaged and it will require a new lock. Buksa says luckily no windows were broken and it looks like nothing was taken either. However, the break-in is not something they’re unfamiliar with.

“It has happened a couple times in the past since I been here whether it was through a back entrance or even attempts through the front door. It is pretty rare but it’s not the first time,” he says.

Buksa says he’s not sure why someone would want to break into the shelter, but adds, they could have been looking into a specific animal or there to steal their donation box as they just had their annual gala event.

Security cameras did capture video of one suspect inside the building, but Buksa says the images are dark, making it difficult to come up with a description of the suspect.
The shelter plans to re-open Thursday.
