Smooth transition from Hilltops to Huskies for Trumpy

Watch above: After five years and three Canadian championships, John Trumpy has made a smooth transition from the Hilltops to the Huskies

SASKATOON – John Trumpy had a solid junior career with the Saskatoon Hilltops, which included a trio of Canada Bowl Championships.

After five years in the PFC, Trumpy made the jump to the CIS. The transition has been smooth.

The 5’11, 177 pound receiver is sixth in the Canada West in catches with 31, tenth in yards with 446 and has the second most receiving touchdowns with five.

“I knew what I was capable of doing but at the same time I wasn’t really sure what I was going up against,” admits Trumpy.

“I think after the first couple winter workouts is when I first started to realize that it was a league I would be able to make some plays in.”

The 23-year-old joined a solid group of receivers this year and has fit right in, becoming one of the top first-year pass catchers in the nation.

“He’s always competed. There is not a ball in the air Trumps doesn’t think he can catch,” praises Trumpy’s head coach Brian Towriss.

“He just competes all the time and he’s been a great asset to our offence this year.”

Trumpy is one of four Huskies with over 20 catches this season and one of five with over 200 yards receiving. Even with the ball being spread around by Drew Burko, the former Holy Cross Crusader has found instant chemistry with his quarterback.

“Gaining the chemistry with him (Burko) throughout the summer was big for me,” says Trumpy.

“I think the biggest thing was just making the tough catches during the meaningless throw-arounds where he felt comfortable knowing that I was going to be able to get myself open.”

Trumpy also brings his championship pedigree to the Huskies from the Hilltops, something the team may lean on when the playoffs begin Nov. 7.
