WATCH: West Vancouver to replace trash bins at a cost of $400,000

WATCH: Taxpayers in West Vancouver have discovered they paid big bucks for fancy garbage cans. Ted Chernecki has the details.

Taxpayers in West Vancouver are on the hook for hundreds of thousands of dollars for an update to the city’s trash bins.

The city has ordered just over 50 new units and plans to add about another 150 in the next two years.

West Vancouver chief administrative officer Nina Leemhuis says it is part of the life cycle and it is time for the old trash bins to go.

Leemhuis says some of the garbage cans are just not adequate.

The total garbage bin replacement budget is almost $400,000 and the contract to a Langley company was awarded without public tender.

Leemhuis says there is only one supplier who could meet all the characteristics that the city felt were important.

The new cans are made from recycled material.

They have a basket for binners, so they don’t have to dig down.

The top can’t be removed and there’s a foot pedal, so you don’t have to touch anything with your hands.
