Freezing rain warning northwest of Edmonton

(UPDATE: By about 1:50 p.m. Wednesday, Environment Canada’s freezing rain warning had been lifted.)

EDMONTON – On Wednesday morning Environment Canada issued a freezing rain warning for areas west of Edmonton, including the Yellowhead Highway.

The agency said a band of freezing rain had formed along Highway 43 from Whitecourt to Onoway, and along Highway 16 from Niton Junction to Entwistle.  The weather system was moving southeast towards Spruce Grove.

Paved surfaces like roads and parking lots were at risk of becoming icy and slippery.  People were asked to take extra care.

The following communities are included in the warning:

  • Spruce Grove
  • Morinville
  • Mayerthorpe
  • Evansburg
  • Whitecourt
  • Edson
  • Fox Creek
  • Swan Hills

The RCMP in Grande Prairie also issued a warning, saying road conditions were very poor on Highway 43 northwest of Hythe.

They said there were a number of collisions and vehicles slipping off the road.
