Blood Tribe Police Service Sergeant wins prestigious award

Blood Tribe Police Service Sergeant Jim Bennett is gaining special attention this week. The community-minded officer was named as one of two recipients of the Police of the Year award, presented by the First Nations Chiefs of Police Association. Bennett appreciates the opportunity to bring home the prestigious award.

“It always feels good to be recognized, but really the community already recognizes me. I love my job, I think the people see that and I think that’s why some of these things come my way.”

But this award didn’t just come Bennett’s way. Along with performing his everyday duties, he’s worked tirelessly in the community by heading multiple programs, sitting on several key committees, helping the needy, and improving the service’s image.

“He’s always happy, always looking to help somebody out. always looking to provide guidance to me as officer, or anyone else we work with.”

Bennett has worked at the Blood Tribe for over six years and in that time not only has he been an exceptional officer, he’s also become a beloved member of the community. Blood Tribe Elder Martin Eaglechild has gained much respect for Bennett over the years.

“Any kind of function, he’s always coming out. And that’s what we like about Jim, he’s not just an officer, he’s involved in the community.”

True to himself Bennett is going to continue to uphold his service’s motto.

“The motto of the police service is ‘aspemotsio’, and it means in Blackfoot helping one another.”
