A scheduled event to unveil a refurbished CF 104 Starfighter went ahead as planned at Calgary’s Military Museums Wednesday, despite the shooting in Ottawa.
Veterans at the event said going ahead with it demonstrates how Canadians react when faced of adversity.
“Being a department of national defense facility, I think it shows resilience to keep moving forward, and that’s indicative of the Canadian way of doing things,” said one participant.
And for many, moving forward now means fighting an elusive enemy.
“We have a major threat in the world, and it’s the first time it’s really impacted Canada at hand, and it’s frightening and I hope we take action to try and prevent those random acts from occuring again. I’m not sure we can ever do that frankly, because it’s an enemy one does not recognize,” said retired Starfighter pilot Gerry Morrison.
A daunting task, but not impossible, according to others.
“We need to remain optimistic,” said Dave Lowery, the son of a Starfighter pilot.”
“The reason we are a free country is because of the people that worked the first world war – we need to embrace that,” said Lowery.
