OPP and Toronto police launch 4-day road safety campaign

TORONTO – Toronto police and the Ontario Provincial Police are joining forces for a four-day road safety campaign called Operation Shield.

Police will target aggressive driving, distracted driving, impaired driving and seat belt safety along both directions of Highway 404 from 16th Avenue to Highway 401.

Around 30 officers will take part in the initiative which begins Wednesday and continues on separate days until Nov. 7.

As of Oct. 5, OPP have recorded 216 road deaths with 168 of them attributed to traffic violations.

Speeding and distracted driving make up the highest number of deaths with 51 and 45 respectively.

The Ontario government announced on Tuesday it will be re-introducing tougher distracted driving legislation which includes stiffer fines and penalties for texting while driving.

The legislation, if passed, would increase the maximum fine for distracted driving to $1,000 and impose three demerit upon a conviction.
