WATCH: The Ontario Provincial Police have launched their annual Thanksgiving holiday safety blitz dubbed “Project Impact”. They’re targeting speeding, distracted driving, driving without seatbelts and impaired driving.
TORONTO – Ontario provincial police will pay special attention to motorist on highways this Thanksgiving weekend.
Distracted driving, speeding, impaired driving and unbuckled seatbelts will be the focus of a road safety campaign called Operation Impact.
As of Oct. 5, OPP have recorded 216 road deaths with 168 of them attributed to traffic violations.
Speeding and distracted driving make up the highest number of deaths with 51 and 45 respectively.

Meanwhile, unbuckled seatbelts were linked to 38 deaths, followed in fourth with 34 from impaired driving.
OPP say two drivers were charged Thursday for excessive speeding with both of them caught going over 200 kilometres per hour.
Police are also reminding everyone heading into cottage country to make trail and water safety important priorities as well.
