An app helping cyclists avoid hazards in the works at UVic

A team at the university of Victoria is developing an app that will allow cyclists to alert other two-wheeled commuters to all sorts of hazards.

When something goes wrong for cyclists on the road, from near misses or a fall to a hazard on the roadway, there’s been no way of knowing about it. Until now.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

The team has created a mapping web site called bikemaps.org, where cyclists can track their routes and track any incidents they’ve encountered along the way.

In its first few days of operation, more than 150 reports have been filed right across Canada, the U.S. and as far away as Australia.

It is filling an important gap. Only 30 to 40 per cent of cycling incidents are captured by traditional data, largely because ICBC and police require vehicle insurance and a claim before tracking can take place.
