Lodging centre set up for displaced Calgary residents

Displaced residents lined up outside Mewata Armouries Tuesday.

CALGARY- The city had to set up 350 rooms Monday evening for residents displaced by a power outage which has left hundreds of Calgarians in the dark.

If the number of people that require accommodation continues to increase, a lodging centre is now available.

Ken Uzeloc with CEMA said running out of room is a concern.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“You need to be careful,” he said. “You’re dealing with families, you’re dealing with a number of different things, so we need to make sure the right accommodation is used for people.”

The city arranged hotel rooms for displaced residents Sunday and Monday night, averaging 110-120 dollars per night.

“We’re getting close to that availability of room issue for us,” Uzeloc explained.

So far, the lodging centre hasn’t been used, but if more people require a place to stay, the city is ready.
