Disgruntled homeowner makes public display of frustration

REGINA – If you’ve recently driven down Montague Street you may have noticed a rather blunt sign on display.

Homeowner, Patty Ward has nailed a message to a tree on her property that reads, “Are there trustworthy contractors in Saskatchewan, please help.”

Ward explained Thursday that she is fed up after paying a local company $70,000 for extensive interior and exterior renovations to her home.

The work was contracted to be done by the end of September, but Ward believes she’s in worse shape then when work started in May.

“There was no real workers, nobody really knew what they were doing. I started listening to what people were doing and they were asking people how to do things, and it wasn’t looking very good.”

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

With winter just around the corner, Ward adds she’s not just worried about completing the job, but also the quality of work.

“I’m getting scared now,” she explained. “You can light a match and the wind was blowing right through the house.”

The contract company told Global News it’s equally as frustrated with the delays.

The owner cited a lack of communication, weather, and unexpected underground electrical work for pushing back the deadline and adds clients are made aware that circumstances outside their control can create delays.

A company that seeks out trustworthy businesses in the province, including contractors, said a contract is the responsibility of both homeowner and business.

Founder of Trusted Regina, Sara Wheelwright adds that residents need to communicate exactly what they are looking for and make sure they are receiving the same from their contractor.

“If you find yourself in the thick of things and if you feel things are going wrong, put the brakes on it as soon as you don’t see things as soon as you should. That’s the first thing,” said Wheelwright.

Wheelwright adds if you continue with a contractor when things aren’t going the way you envisioned, you may find yourself with few options and frustrated with the results.

Ward’s sign is garnering some attention. She received a number of business cards since posting it on Tuesday.
