LUMSDEN, Sask. – Did you walk to school as a kid? Chances are you did, but your kids don’t. Saskatchewan In Motion wants to change that.
“We’re hoping parents will give walking a try just once, and will see that it’s a lot easier or convenient and make it an ongoing habit,” said Kim Herperger, Saskatchewan In Motion project coordinator.
Currently, only 28 per cent of Saskatchewan students walk to school, but just one generation ago 58 per cent of students did so on a regular basis.
“Walking to school is a really easy way for kids to build physical activity into their day,” said Herperger.
Lumsden Elementary was the first to take the challenge Monday. They are one of 30 schools registered to encourage students to walk or bike this week.
“If you’re not at a school that’s registered you can still participate,” said Herperger.
“All you need to do is walk to school once this week and send your walk to school selfie into the Saskatchewan in Motion’s Facebook page.”
Participating school are up for a $1,000 gift card to a sporting goods store.
