WINNIPEG – Hundreds of walkers carried illuminated lanterns through The Forks at twilight Saturday to support people battling blood cancer.

The second annual Light the Night Walk was one of 200 walks taking place this fall in North America. In Winnipeg, $130,000 in donations was raised at the walk.

“The support means so much to patients and their families living with this every day,” said Winnipeg walk co-ordinator Karen Grant.

Participants held lanterns displaying their connections to the cause; a white lantern for blood cancer patients and survivors, a red one to walk as a supporter and a gold one in memory of a loved one lost.

Every year communities across the country come together to raise funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada. There are 11 walks across Canada this year and the goal is to raise $5,000,000 to find cancer cures.
