Pedestrian bridge collapses onto Detroit freeway

DETROIT — A pedestrian bridge over a Detroit freeway has collapsed, shutting the roadway in both directions for the morning rush-hour period.

Police at the scene tell Detroit broadcasters one person had minor injuries following the bridge’s Friday morning collapse onto the Southfield Freeway. The road was closed from Interstate 96 to Joy Road.

The reason for the collapse wasn’t immediately clear. Michigan Department of Transportation spokesman Rob Morosi said in an email that witnesses at the scene told police a truck may have hit the bridge, but those were “early indications.”

The Associated Press sent a message seeking information, including the condition of the injured person, to a state police spokesman.

Officials couldn’t say how long the roadway would be closed.
