WATCH: Wreck Beach landslide aerials
A man’s body has been found partially buried in a pile of sand at Vancouver’s Wreck Beach Wednesday night.
Sgt. Drew Grainger with UBC RCMP says a beach-goer found saw two human feet protruding from the sand around 4 p.m. in the area between trails 4 and 6, and called the police.
Officers attended and confirmed a deceased person was buried under a significant amount of sand.
Support services were called to extricate the body from the area.
Police say the victim is a 23-year-old man from eastern Canada. They are still working to identify next-of-kin. Police say the death is accidental.
Grainger says it appears the person was camping in the area, known to be an active landslide zone.
The speculation is that a significant slab of sand came off the cliff face and likely buried and suffocated the victim.
At this point, the incident looks purely accidental, according to police.
Grainger says the landslide could have happened at some point during last week.
Officers will be on scene today looking for any evidence that would lead to the victim’s ID.
It does not look like any other victims have been buried.
“We have searched very thoroughly this morning and found no secondary victims,” says Grainger.
There have also been no witnesses.
