VANCOUVER – Surrey mayoral candidate Doug McCallum is calling for more officers on the city’s streets.

This follows the death of 17-year-old Serena Vermeersch on Tuesday and another homicide on Friday night.

McCallum says there are only 36 RCMP general duty officers on duty on any given shift and there needs to be more.

“Surrey residents are terrified, and the amount of random acts of violence happening on Surrey’s streets has a direct correlation to the lack of police on patrol,” said McCallum in a release. “It is time to get officers out of the office and onto the streets.”

“An increase in visible enforcement on our streets is essential to give the public peace of mind and send a message to criminals that the City and the RCMP are watching,” added McCallum. “There is a distinct lack of leadership on the issue of public safety, and someone must come forward to change the terrible path we find our city on at the moment.”
