WINNIPEG -Bystanders leaped into action after a horrific crash on a residential street in Winnipeg Wednesday, holding down a driver who tried to flee, pulled a knife, and said he was “hammered.”

There were three vehicles involved in the crash just after 4 p.m. on Pacific Avenue, including a black SUV and silver car that wound up on the sidewalk in front of two homes.

The black SUV drove at high speed east down Pacific and collided with a northbound car, which then hit a minivan, a witness told Global News. The SUV driver stumbled out of the wreck and tried to flee.

Garth Reimann, a City of Winnipeg employee who was working in the area, saw the drama unfold.

“Then the guy from the black truck got out and he says, ‘I just want to get out of here,’ and two guys said, ‘You’re not going anywhere,’ and then that’s when he pulled the knife out and he’s gonna stab one, and one guy just grabbed him by the wrist, the knife fell out, my driver kicked it across the street,” Reimann says.

Reimann said as the driver was being restrained, the man said, “I just want to get the f*** out of here because I’m hammered.”

It appeared the jaws of life were needed to free at least one victim. The driver of the silver car was taken to hospital in critical condition, witnesses said, though police couldn’t immediately be reached to confirm details.
