Bridegroom and 17 others killed after boat carrying wedding party sinks in Pakistan

Severe flooding sank a boat carrying a wedding party in Pakistan’s Punjab province on Sunday, killing the bridegroom and 17 others, officials said.

Police in the nearby city of Multan said the army-run boat was carrying more than 30 people when it capsized near Sher Shar bridge.

The bodies of bridegroom Zahid Hamid and his brother were taken to Nishtar Hospital in Multan.

The bride and 21 other people survived and were taken to safety by emergency teams.

“My parents advised my in-laws to wait until the floodwaters reduced, don’t go. They (bridegroom’s family) said people were going on boats, so let’s go. That’s why I left my parents home,” said the rescued bride, Mishal as she was comforted by his relatives.
