Underwater cleanup takes place in Vancouver

Members of the Vancouver Aquarium dive team are performing an underwater cleanup today off the Maritime Museum Dock in Vancouver.

So far this morning, they haven’t found any garbage but that’s because there’s a layer of thick silt covering up the debris.

The event is a joint effort between the Aquarium and the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup, which started as a small volunteer-driven event in 1994. By 2002, the event was national.

In 2012, the Shoreline Cleanup celebrated its 19th anniversary with more than 57,000 volunteers.
