Flash flooding in Arizona leaves people stranded, without power

TORONTO – A week after a Monsoon battered Phoenix, Arizona, the area was ravaged again Tuesday after heavy rain caused flash flooding.

Multiple people had to be rescued from their vehicles when parts of Interstate 17 and other low-level roads flooded.

Several people also had to be rescued from their house Tuesday afternoon after the floodwaters trapped them inside.

According to the National Weather Service, up to five centimetres of rain fell in about an hour in some areas.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

The storm also knocked out power to about 3,000 homes and caused a rock slide.

While Arizona is a mostly dry climate, thunderstorms in August are common and can last for days, increasing the chance for flooding.

People took to social media to post images of the flooding.
