When it comes to TV news, timing can be everything.
Local news station KCTV-5 was on the scene of a partial collapse of the Rios De Agua Viva Church in Kansas City Thursday.
They were interviewing Bill Carter, an engineer for Foundation Engineering Specialists, about the building’s structural integrity following the collapse earlier in the day.
Within moments, their question was answered for them.
As the reporter and cameraman interviewed Mr. Carter on the front lawn, another section of a northeast Kansas City church collapsed directly behind them.
“Did you get that on film?” a surprised Carter asks his interviewer.
The situation could have been extremely dire. According to reports, 64 people were inside Rios De Agua Viva when the initial collapse occurred, many of them children attending Bible study camp.
Fortunately, authorities say everyone managed to safely evacuate the building.
Heavy rain is being blamed for causing the collapse. Carter later offered his explanation for the collapse to KCTV-5.
“The mortar for instance in these buildings is a lime-based mortar and it’s chemically unstable,” Carter said. “So exposed to moisture, the moisture takes the lime out of the mortar and there’s nothing left but sand.”
