Via Rail delays after CN train hits vehicle at crossing near Trenton

TRENTON, Ont. – Via Rail says service is resuming after a fatal crash between a CN freight train and a vehicle in eastern Ontario.

The vehicle’s driver was killed in the crash that happened at about 10 a.m. just west of Trenton, Ont.

Via Rail spokeswoman Mylene Belanger says passengers on lines linking Toronto to Ottawa and Montreal are facing delays.

She says six trains that use the routes are delayed between 30 minutes and 3 1/2 hours.

Belanger adds the trains that left their destinations in the early hours of the morning are affected the most.

She says other passengers should no longer expect significant delays as the tracks where the collision happened are now open.

Jim Feeny of CN Rail says no one was injured on the freight train, which was travelling from Montreal to Toronto and had two locomotives.

Quinte West fire Chief John Whalen says the driver of the passenger vehicle was pronounced dead on the scene.

He adds there were no other people in the vehicle and firefighters were working to extricate the man’s body from the car.
