5 children overcome as Quebec daycare evacuated after carbon monoxide leak

MONTREAL – Five children were overcome by fumes and more than 80 people evacuated after a carbon monoxide leak in a daycare  in Saint-Eustache, Que.

Seventy-two children and ten adults from the Les petits explorateurs daycare were evacuated and transported to the local hospital to be treated for possible carbon-monoxide poisoning.

The City of Saint-Eustache confirmed that five children were overcome by the fumes and that all parents have been notified.

Officials are investigating the cause of the leak, which according to the city, has been localized and poses no risk to neighbouring buildings.

At a press conference in Quebec City, the province’s Family Minister, Francine Charbonneau, expressed her concern and sympathy for the affected families.

“It must have been terrible for a parent to get a call that all the daycare is in the hospital,” she said.

“Now, we have to figure out what happened.”

Saint-Eustache is an off-island suburb of Montreal, located about 45 km north-west of the city.
