SASKATOON – A storm that slammed Saskatoon Monday afternoon turned streets into rivers of water, flooded out intersections and popped manhole covers.

The first major storm of the year hit just after 5 p.m. and lasted for about 30 minutes.

Upwards of 20 millimetres of rain came down during the downpour. Environment Canada said 22.3 mm of rain came down in the city on Monday.

Huge puddles and flooding were reported in many neighbourhoods.

One of the worst hit areas was the Idylwyld Drive North underpass at Circle Drive. It was closed for several hours due to flooding.

City crews were out in the wake of the storm to clean up the damage.

Officials said the amount of water on the streets is part of the normal storm water management system.
