Who is Ric McIver?

EDMONTON – Calgary MLA Ric McIver officially announced his intention to run in Alberta’s PC leadership race May 7, 2014. He is joining Ken Hughes, the only other official candidate so far, in the race.

Here’s a look at his background:

  • First elected in 2012 as the PC MLA for Calgary-Hays in “a landslide victory.”
  • Named Transportation Minister after the election.  Served in that capacity until December 2013, when he was named Infrastructure Minister in a Cabinet shuffle.
  • Prior to Provincial politics he served as a Calgary Alderman from 2001 to 2010.
  • Ran for Mayor of Calgary in 2010 election, finished in second to Naheed Nenshi with 32 per cent of the vote.
  • McIver has previously owned and operated a food distribution and marketing wholesale business.
  • McIver is married to his wife Christine. The couple has four children and two grandchildren.
