Design contract awarded for City Centre Airport redevelopment

A contract to redevelop Edmonton’s City Centre Airport lands has been awarded to Vancouver-based design firm Perkins + Will.

The announcement was made at Wednesday’s city council meeting. Councillors had been considering five separate bids from firms in the U.S., Sweden, the Netherlands and the U.K..

"This is a historic day for our city and a significant milestone for this project," said City Manager Simon Farbrother. "We’re excited to move the project forward – this is just another step in the transformation of our downtown area."

The project is expected to be one of the city’s largest land redevelopments in decades.

The Perkins + Will plan proposes leaving half the land as green space, anchored by a 72-hectare park and lake using rain and treated grey water.

The LRT would run north through the site, but a two-kilometre tram line, which could one day reach downtown, would go northwest to move people around the community.

After signing a contract, officials expect it will take about 15 months of design and public consultation to come up with a detailed master plan.

They hope construction will start in 2014.
