The Alberta Legislature, April 1, 2014. Emily Mertz, Global News

EDMONTON – The Alberta government says it will update its laws on labour rules in the construction industry.

The changes follow a new independent report into the state of the industry.

One of the changes will see arbitration become the dispute resolution mechanism for employment agreements on major projects.

Labour Minister Thomas Lukaszuk says the changes are small but important to the construction industry.

Lukaszuk says Alberta is still dealing with critical labour shortages in its rapidly growing economy.

About 15 per cent of Alberta’s construction labour force is unionized.
