Alward urges Sussex residents to stay on guard as water levels recede

WATCH: Homes and businesses are flooded in parts of New Brunswick and some roads are closed as rivers break their banks

SUSSEX, N.B. – New Brunswick Premier David Alward is urging residents of Sussex not to let their guard down after water levels in the town receded overnight.

Alward visited the community Thursday to get a first-hand look at the aftermath of flooding, which forced some people from their homes.

He toured a comfort centre set up by the Red Cross, where he met Wendy Inkpen.

The 49-year-old single mother escaped her basement apartment Wednesday as a result of the flooding.

She says relatives have helped her but she is hoping the province can provide some compensation.

Alward says it is too early to provide damage estimates.
