New Brunswickers on alert as water levels in rivers keep rising

FREDERICTON – New Brunswickers living near the province’s rivers are on alert as water levels continue to rise.

Warm temperatures and heavy rain in the forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday have done little to abate flood worries.

Of particular concern is the Nashwaak River, which officials expect to reach flood stage Tuesday.

Residents who live along the Nashwaak say so far, they’ve seen worse. Cherie Ouellette of Durham Bridge has water beginning to creep into her backyard, but since her home flooded in 2010, she says it takes a lot of water to scare her.

“There are always jams upriver. Every year at this time,” said Ouellette. “And because it’s already opened, a major jam has already passed through. I don’t see a problem. I have my fingers crossed, but I’m very hopeful that this year will be a breeze.”

River Watch spokesman Richard Keeley says officials are also monitoring numerous ice jams that have formed along the St. John River and other river systems.

Keeley says there are reports of localized flooding, but there have been no major incidents.
