Wildfire fight still going strong near Osoyoos

NEAR OSOYOOS — The wildfire that sparked Friday night northeast of Osoyoos is still burning strong but hasn’t spread significantly since Sunday. It now sits at 84 hectares.

Fire protection officers have made a containment line, which will prevent the blaze from spreading to power lines and homes.

Jim Mottishaw, Forest Protection Officer with the Kamloops Fire Centre, says the blaze will continue to go up the hill and extinguish on its own once it hits rocks and has nothing else to burn.

“It’s still burning way above us in an inaccessible topography. There will be smokes lingering up there for some time and it may grow in some size, but not where it may affect people or values,” said Mottishaw.

Officials believe the fire is human caused but have yet to determine how it started.
