REGINA – At the beginning of April, Canada Post enforced a rate hike on postage: stamps that used to cost 63-cents, now cost 85-cents. To make the transition smoother for companies that bought the 63-cent stamps in bulk, the corporation was supposed to sell 22-cent ones to make up the difference – but those stamps are nowhere to be found in Regina.
“You don’t sell cars without tires on them. I mean, this is the same thing. If you’re worried about service, you would likely have enough made up for hundreds of thousands,” said Robin McKenzie, a local business owner.
Two sheets of 22-cent stamps were sent out at the end of March to get retailers started. Canada post says stores who needed more, are expected to order them in.
One local retailer told Global News they did just that, and were told by the corporation that the 22-cent stamps were already sold out Canada-wide. Canada Post argues that’s simply not the case.
“We are experiencing some very localized shortages of the 22-cent stamp. And that means that some post offices have run out. Earlier this week we sent more 22-cent stamps to our retailers,” said Anick Losier, a spokesperson for Canada Post.
Those stamps are expected to arrive as soon as Friday, to early next week. Until then, Canada Post is advising people to try purchasing other denominations of stamps. As well, they are extending their 30-day return policy for anyone who has unused coils, until the end of May.
