High water levels prompt flooding alert for areas east of Calgary

CALGARY- A high water level alert was issued by the province on Wednesday evening, for Wheatland County.

Officials say there are elevated water levels in streams and rivers in the area, which is east of Chestermere and includes the town of Strathmore.

As a result, the following roads have been closed:

  • Township road 252 between range road 262 and 263.
  • Range road 243A Namaka road south west exit.
  • Range road 243 between township road 274 and 280.

In the meantime, pockets of flooding and some road washouts have affected parts of the Siksika First Nation, and a contractor who does water service told Global News that the river quickly rose several feet around noon on Wednesday.

Rocky View County is also seeing higher water levels, and the following road closures are in effect:

  • Range Road 263 north of Agrimax, approximately 2 miles south of Highway 72
  • Range Road 270 between Township Road 270 and Highway 567
  • Range Road 252 between Township Road 270 and 273A
  • Township Road 264 between Range Road 261 and 262
  • Range Road 271 between Highway 564 (south) and Township Road 252A
  • Township Road 274 between Range Road 254 and 260
  • Range Road 265 between Highway 72 and Township Road 285
  • Range Road 22 between Township Road 272 and 274

A number of similar advisories have been issued in the past week for Alberta communities, as the spring melt is now underway.
