WATCH: Hockey registration fees increase 50 per cent in Vancouver

In Vancouver, registration fees for hockey are increasing 50 per cent in the younger leagues.

Add that to the cost of equipment and travel, and there are concerns the sport could soon be out of reach for many.

The season will now cost about $900 a month, up from $600. Youngest players will pay the most.

The hockey association declined Global News’ request for an on-camera interview, but said the fee increases are to buy ice time outside of Vancouver.

The association says they are getting squeezed for ice time in Vancouver by the Park Board, which is allowing more time for figure skating, public skating, and ringette, which generate more revenue.
