Mulcair selects national campaign co-chairs in lead-up to 2015 campaign

OTTAWA — NDP leader Tom Mulcair has picked MPs Jean Crowder and Alexandre Boulerice as national campaign co-chairs, Global News has learned.

The leader is expected to announce the decision during a speech to the party’s federal council in Ottawa Sunday morning, according to a senior NDP source.

As national campaign co-chairs, Crowder and Boulerice, who were elected to the House of Commons in 2004 and 2011 respectively, will lead preparations for the next federal election.

Scheduled for October 2015, that race is already shaping up to be an interesting one, with Justin Trudeau holding a consistent lead in the polls since he took the reins of the Liberal party last year, and the NDP focusing on holding on to its unprecedented breakthrough in 2011.

Crowder, born in Montreal, is a British Columbia MP who currently sits on the Commons’ aboriginal affairs committee and acts as the Opposition critic on that file.

Boulerice, a first-term MP representing a Montreal-area riding, quickly became one of the party’s go-to spokespeople for several high profile files.

He is currently the critic for labour, Canada Post and deputy critic for ethics.

The party’s federal council this weekend already selected veteran strategist Anne McGrath as the party’s next national director.

“Anne has played a crucial role in helping bring our party to where we are today and I couldn’t be more pleased that she will be taking on this important role,” Mulcair said in a statement.

McGrath was the chief of staff to former NDP leader Jack Layton, and was president of the party from 2006 to 2009.

She replaces Nathan Rotman who recently stepped down to put his weight behind Olivia Chow’s campaign for Toronto mayor.
