VPD’s “cutest crime fighters” need a name

No crime fighter can exist without a catchy name — especially when it comes to two adorable German Shepherd puppies.

The two eight-week-old male pups, one black and one sable-coloured, are the latest Vancouver Police Department recruits and they need the help of Vancouver elementary school students to name them.

Over the next two weeks, the VPD is inviting Kindergarten to Grade 7 classes from Vancouver schools to come up with a name for the puppies, who come from a long line of police dogs.

The contest rules are:

  • open to Kindergarten to Grade 7 classes in Vancouver schools
  • one entry per class
  • submit two names (can say if it’s for the black pup or the sable pup) in the single entry
  • entry must include the school name, class/teacher name, and phone number for the school
  • submit via email to namethepuppy@vpd.ca
  • keep in mind that the puppies are both males, and will be working police dogs

This is the third time the VPD has run this contest with previous winning names being Nitro (1997) and Diesel (2006).

The contest starts today (April 3) and closes on April 17. The winning class will be given a tour of the Dog Squad facility, get a chance to meet the puppies and other service dogs and get a police dog demonstration.

The winners will be announced on April 22.
