SASKATOON – A man remains in critical condition in a Saskatoon hospital after falling ill when he returned from a business trip to West Africa.

Rod Ogilvie, the president and CEO of Global Geological Services, fell ill after returning from Liberia.

There were concerns he may have contracted an infectious disease like Ebola, but tests came back negative.

The latest health and medical news emailed to you every Sunday.

Close friend and business associate George Sharp told Global News Ogilvie is still in intensive care, on a respirator and in a state of unconsciousness.

Sharp said Ogilvie has spent a lot of time in Africa and has never been sick before.

“He’s been very careful with his health and precautions and staying out of trouble that way,” said Sharp.

“I would say in this case, he just got unlucky. It can happen to any one of us.”

Friends have suggested Ogilvie is being treated for bacterial meningitis, but the Saskatoon Health Region said it does not have authorization to release information.

Health region officials said they are not aware of any risks to the public.

Only family and close friends are being allowed to visit Ogilvie.
