Memorial trail ride for Kelowna father

KELOWNA — He was an adventure loving family man with a passion for cycling, but Jason St. Pierre’s life was cut short last month doing the very sport he loved.

The 40-year-old died suddenly, collapsing during a trail ride due to complications with a genetic disorder.

“Jason, he was a mountain of a man,” said friend Brent Prokop, “[he] always put everyone’s needs above his own, his generosity was unmatched.”

St. Pierre left behind a wife, Karen, and two boys Evan and Kai.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Kai was born with low functioning down syndrome and needs 24 hour attention to get through the day.

If losing a father and husband wasn’t enough, now the family had to deal with the financial blow.

“I have to figure out and be really creative in how I can make enough money to pay any of our bills,” said St. Pierre’s wife, Karen.

But the community rallied behind them, organizing what will become an annual memorial ride for St. Pierre, with all the money going directly to his family.

“You can’t put yourself in Karen’s shoes, she’s got a tough road ahead of her,” said Prokop, who helped organize the event.

The memorial ride is taking place May 3. For details on how to take part you can go here.

Karen St. Pierre said she is overwhelmed with gratitude for all the support she’s recieved after her husbands death.

“I’m just so amazingly touched people inspired by good people just, it just touches my heart.”
