Shop tenants cleanup after major flood at NW Calgary mall

Firefighters are working to cleanup after a water main break at the Safeway store in Brentwood Mall. In some areas, water is more than a foot deep.

They were called to the 3600 block of Brentwood Road around 6:00 a.m. Sunday. When crews arrived, they found the entire mall affected by the flood. Water was also pouring into the parking lot.

Tenant Julie Turner of Pet Planet spent most of the morning mopping up. She received a call from the building’s property manager, informing her of the flood.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“When I got here, we had a lot of water on the floor,” says Turner. “There was water seeping from the wall throughout the floor, under the racks.”

Turner is hopeful insurance will cover water damage.

City Water Services were also on scene, working to shut down the water main that supplies the mall.

Representatives from city roads have been called in to assess roads in the area because of the possibility of water freezing and ice accumulating on them.

Mall management is trying to determine whether the entire mall will be able to open today; at this point they say it’s unlikely.

Half a dozen stores are still closed due to the flood. The stores unaffected by the water are open for business.
