Southern Albertans waiting patiently to start prepping gardens

You may have noticed this spring as a chilly one that’s been full of late storms and freezes. Southern Alberta green houses are being impacted by the change in weather patterns over the years.

“We are finding with the customers they are not sure what to do,” says Karen Barby, the owner of the Green Haven Garden Centre in Lethbridge.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Barby says she has noticed planting season is getting later and later each year.

“Last year people were buying their own plants to put in their greenhouses and now I think people are waiting till it warms up.”

The balmy temperature of 30C inside the green house and the bright floral aisles attract those eager to get planting. Barby says most people just come for a stroll and pretend it’s spring – but no one is actually buying yet.

“They are just getting that warm environment feel the smell of the humidity and the soil and getting excited,” said Barby.
