TORONTO – A U.S. company is voluntarily recalling some of its homeopathic products after test results showed they may contain traces of actual medicine.

Terra Medica recalled 56 lots of various products after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) determined the items could contain undeclared penicillin.

“FDA has determined that these products have the potential to contain penicillin or derivatives of penicillin, which may be produced during the fermentation process,” the agency said in a press release.

The Pleo-EX homeopathic drug products are sold in liquid, tablet, capsule, ointment and suppository forms.

“In patients who are allergic to beta-lactam antibiotics, even at low levels, exposure to penicillin can result in a range of allergic reactions from mild rashes to severe and life-threatening anaphylactic reactions,” the FDA warned.

Terra Medica said it hasn’t received any reports of adverse events related to the recall.

The company said it is notifying customers by email and letter and is arranging for return of all recalled products.

According to its website, the Pleo products “provide a broad spectrum medical alternative that is not antibiotic or hormone based while effectively delivering acute and chronic care.”

Terra Medica was established in 2003 and is the sister company to Biomed International Products Corporation, a Canadian wholesale distributor.
