Former MP Bonnie Crombie enters Mississauga mayoral race

TORONTO – Former Liberal MP Bonnie Crombie is set to run for the mayor of Mississauga.

The city councillor filed her registration papers Tuesday morning at city hall.

She is one of four candidates to publicly declare their candidacy to replace long-time mayor Hazel McCallion, who will retire at the end of the year.

Scott Chapman, Riazuddin Choudhry and former MP Steve Mahoney are already on the ballot.

Mahoney, 66, was a Liberal member of the Ontario legislature from 1987 to 1995 and a Liberal MP from 1997 to 2003, when he served as a cabinet minister under then-prime minister Jean Chretien.

Crombie was first elected as an MP for Mississauga-Streetsville in 2008 but lost to Conservative Brad Butt in 2011.

She entered municipal politics in Sept. 2011 by beating Carolyn Parrish by a little more than 200 votes.

Citizens will head to the polls on Oct. 27.
