CALGARY – Police have charged a man in his 50’s after a woman was hit and killed while crossing the street in the city’s downtown core last month.

The 39-year-old woman was using a marked crosswalk at 10 Avenue and 5 Street S.W. on February 13th when she was hit by a Chevrolet Express van.

The van was turning from southbound 5 Avenue onto westbound 10 Avenue S.W. and had a green light at the time, but police say the pedestrian was crossing with a walk signal and had the right of way.

The victim was dragged under the van for a short distance before it came to a stop.

EMS rushed her to the hospital in critical condition, but she later succumbed to her injuries.

After consultation with the Crown Prosecutor’s Office, police have charged 51-year-old Edwin Yim Chau with failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.
